1973 Mustang Fastback

updated: Feb 11th 2007 @ 04:01 PM

1973 Ford Mustang Fastback

Originally a Metallic Brown. I purchased this car with a cheap coat of White paint and a lot of rust. I replaced almost all of the sheetmetal in the back half including trunk floor and gas tank.
I will try to put up some pictures of the progress in starting and finishing order.

Taken shortly  after I bought the car. The Ram Air hood I installed, it came with a flat hood.

Car in place for the body work to start. Not seen but a lot of rust is covered up. I took a ball pean hammer and tapped the front of the left rear tire and a 1" thick peice of body filler fell out. Previous owner just filled the dent instead of hammering out and then filling. I knew there was a lot of filler and rust but was surprised at just how much I would un-cover.

Finally got the Quarter Panel off. This was a lot of work. A lot of measuring took place to ensure the correct cutting locations. Also a lot of spot weld cutting/drilling took place especially seperating the Quarter Panel and the Outer Wheel Housing.

Look at all of the rust!

I was lucky when my Brother-in-Law allowed me to use
his garage to do the work. Having the car on the rack
made it easier to work on, no bending and squatting!!!

Tailight Panel removed, lots of rust there also.

Overall rear view with one Quarter Panel removed,
Tailight Panel and Gas Tank removed.

Car getting ready for primer.

Pushed outside to blow the dust off.

Car primered.

Car primered.

After a few months of sanding, and I do mean "Months" it is
ready for paint. The sanding stage is the most time consuming
but the most important part to make the final stage "painting" look
good.
