Maybe a change for the JFO's

Hey guys it seems its very hard for some judges to give a good explanation and some seem to disagree with them as well I thought of a new layout that could be used in the judging instead of just a remark section. Why not make judges choose between the categories of the best OVERALL for example.

NASTNASO              vs                   NASTNASO

    X                EXTERIOR
    X                INTERIOR
                       ENGINE                         X
    X            UNDERCARRIAGE
                       TRUNK                          X

WINNER: NASTNASO

comments: NASTNASO's car is just sick nuff said :-)

If you lay it out where the judges would have to choose a winner no TIE crap in each of the sections ot would choose a clear winner each time and then let the make their remarks in the comment section below. I have read a few past results that some judges have given one cars more categories but in the end says they are voting for the other person. Makes no sense. Overall judges do an awesome job and it must take a lot of time to be one and this way will make it quicker and more generic for everyone to understand. I know some will argue or state that it is hard to judge between someone who has put alot of work into there car as opposed to a store bought but if they put enough work into the car they should be able to win that categorie is my thought. For example in my faceoff with Blackjack is engine bay is insane and I have put a hell of alot of work into mine but still think he should get the nod in that are.

Just a thought thanks to all judges and keep up the good work as well

Undercarriage and trunk do not weigh as heavily as interior, exterior and engine.  In the end it is their opinion anyway even if you had a chart.  Some of the judges count bling more than go, a reason why you might win the engine bay.

I hear what your saying and agree areas should way more than others but when looking at previous judged faceoffs certain categories arent even mentioned or considered. Which is not fair to some who enjoy doing the faceoffs. And the judging should not be based off opinion. There has to be some reason for choosing not just an opinion which is where categories play into effect

Of course it is opinion.  In a regulat face off you are asking GS members to vote to choose the winner and in a JFO you are asking 3 members to judge (their opinion) the winner.  The comments are to explain their choice.  The formula most judges use is big three, interior, exterior and engine.  Two minors, undercarriage and trunk.  The minors generally do not decide a JFO but will count in a close one.  There is one judge though who counts the 5 areas equally, it is his call.  Part of wagering is to know the judges tendencies.  Part of a JFO is what judges you get.  If it were too predicatabe they would not be as much fun.

Okay let me try to explain what I meant a different way. It is of course each of the judges opinions but what is missing is them making their decission in all of the categories as you agreed are looked at in each faceoff. If they are using all the categories then they are not being explained to those of us putting the cars in these faceoffs. I think the judges do a great job and envy the time they put in to these faceoffs, except when a faceoff goes 10 days LOL.

I hear what you are saying NAST, but what if someone takes the undercarriage, trunk, and say interior? I forsee a whole lot of complaing that people are winning because they have a sound system and clean undercarriage over a chromed out supercharged engine and a beautiful paint job and body kit. People are gonna start complaining that all the work they are doing is for nothing. Just a thought not sasying it will happen.

I wasnt suggesting that just because someone wins more categories than the other especially if they are weaker ones that they should win the faceoff but just making a chart like above would guarantee that all categories are addressed and then in the comments one would have to explain why they chose who they chose.

You cant do it that way James cause one you can get a tie very easily also once one judge awards a car a certain amount of points in a category they are going to expect that point value all the time and these faceoff will get to predictable. Your gonna have to have a clear winner in each category. The reason for lower scoring in the trunk and undercarriage sections is beacuse of their value to the car. A car with a decked out Engine is not gonna lose to a car with a huge stereo system in the back. But it still holds value to the overall of the car which is why it is a category. But again a clear winner in each category needs to be determined every time cant just award points the two are facing off against eachother. Now if you were to have a lot of cars in a faceoff I would say your way would be perfect but not with two cars.

Interesting Ideas, I believe this was brought up before...  What you do is have a weight for each category so then you multiply the weight times how many points were given in that range...

Example - Exterior = 3 points -    if you give them a 9 in that category they get 27 points twords the final number.

Example 2 - Undercarriage - 1 point,  if you give them a 9 in that category they only get 9 points..

So 9 points in the first category is worth more then 9 points in the next.

The main problem we didnt implement something like this is for someone like Nicoles car where she has done a complete 8 cylinder swap, so where would she fall into for an engine? She has a stock engine, but it was installed after market. Would she get a 10 for that? etc...

Thats a good way to handle it and as NAST brought up people will complain if they dont recieve the same number everytime. But I believe he may be on to something.

J good point with nicoles Engine which is why if you just award points to the winner in each category it saves time for the judges and gives everyone an understanding. If you award point to evreyone individually each judge will be different when looking some look at power other work involved and other just bling so I still lean towards awarding point for the winner in each category like in my example up above. Give it a try see what happens. Then let everyone vote on what they like run a couple with both of the new styles and see what eveyrone likes.

If a judge says cars A wins engine for this reason, why do you need a number also?  You know who won and why, therefore the judge can just assign a number reflecting what he wants anyway making the number eyewash.  Crimson, Dapack above good points.

Who in their right mind would insult a member by giving him a 3 on interior,I f I like the interior of ones car better he might get a 10 and the other one might be a 9 or such. So if your judgeing a car ,how do you suggest doing it? Yes not all cars have the same stuff, but in my class the whole car has to be included.Everyone has there likes and dislikes, but judge a car for what is actually there. If not your going to have the same old I like this member better or this member must have the nicer car because his or hers is rated higher on GS.

Op James wants a drink :-) No matter where you go or what site your on your gonna get the popularity and friends voting for there buddies and what not is common place. That is why I enjoy the Judged side of the house even at my real car shows I prefer judged shows they are more correct. Cant win all the time but at least there will be a reason why.

Forcing all members on the site that are classified to compete in a JFO is not the answer. It is a good question about the regular face-offs, maybe requiring people to be classified we can change the way challenges work in the fact that you can only challenge someone with a an equal class or higher.  Requiring you to be classified to enter in the tourney was an effort to get more people classified because tourneys are in higher demand then JFO.   Not giving members the ability to turn off JFO/FO will only cause problems.  Requiring someone to be classified will in turn produce better websites/more photos... So that should be my next effort is to require users to be Classified before doing a regular FO.

I am still thinking on a better way for judges to standardize on an official process...  Maybe when you start the JFO you have an option to choose, score sheet, or judges opinion?  Or something like that. That way we get the best of both worlds.. Thoughts?

What about doing something similar to a boxing scorecard.  10/9/8 point scoring system?
