Getting ready for the road

So; tuesday we started the car for the first time.
It was late at night so we waited until Wednesay to actually do a full warm up and burp the coolant/air

When we ran 20 mins has some minor issues
-First one of my spark plug wires split and frayed when it hit the header and grounded out...not sure why it did so much damage and if the damage caused it to ground, or if it grounding out caused the damage.
-So we used electrical tape around the wire to buy us another 10 mins because the thermostat had just opened up at the time.
-The temp then climbed to approx 210 degrees, which to me I think is hot for a 5.0.....but it quickly went back down after the thermostat opened; the guage could be off due to air near the sensor.  But I did notice the fan never did come on.....we had a slight overflow of coolant because the cap wasn't on, so we closed the cap and basically decided to let it cool down again so we could start over and add more coolant again.
-We also noticed antifreeze in a strange place on the water pump...I recall a cracking noise when it was first bolted up (before torquing it) and thought I was nuts...but perhaps the pump does have a problem and leaking from the housing itself!  It's very very small leak (doesn't even hit the ground, so I'll watch it and see what happens)
-We also noticed 5 drips of oil from the rear-main seal AREA....not 100% sure what's going on there yet.

I ordered new spark plug wires (ford racing) which won't be here until Friday, I am a panzy and don't want to run with the frayed wire because I sware that it's not firing as good as it was.  (J think's I'm nuts)

So today I asked J to help me mount and re-ground the battery in the hatch...my ground sucked and we had it temporarily zip tied to the hatch latch to start the car the first time.  So; it took a few hours to fully install the battery start to finish.  We had to find a mounting point (there's a plug in the upper passenger side near the shock tower, which, when removed reveals a hole directly through the frame and fully accessible without touching the gas tank!  how great is that!)  So; after J hand-sanded the frame for the pole for the battery box, he used a nut and washers so we could also mount the grounding wire to the top side of the post next to the battery in the box itself.  Everything worked great!  I still need to mount a vent tube, but that shouldn't take long.

So; between tomorrow and saturday there's a few minor details before driving the car
-Vent for battery
-Tighten shifter cable
-Warm up the car again and make sure antifreeze level is good
-After warm up check and top off tranny fluid
-Adjust fan temp setting and make sure the fan is going to come on
-Install new spark plug wires
-Install new distributor top housing (it got busted and I had to buy another, its just the top plastic part)
-Try to re-secure trim around the powerpipe & fender hole...my hole is slightly too small and I'm having a hard time (I don't want to go larger on the hole because it's starting to go into the overlapped sheetmetal and it sucks to even get trim to fit over it)
-Re-install inner tire wells and put the front tires back on

....long story short: Drive the car sometime on Saturday to get a sticker and seat the rings.

maiden voyage on saturday was about 16 feet!

Congrats Nicole.  And J. It's always the small things that get to you in a rebuild.  This leak here, that extra bolt there, and by the way you described that "crack" you heard, I bet the pump cracked.  Good luck for saturday, you will get it all together.

Gunner and GW is right. It's always the small little green gremlins that get you in the end, but you guys did more to that car than I would ever be able to do to mine since I'm not that mechanically inlined. Just read my last blog. hahaha Ok, Gunner and GW, start cracking the jokes. I know you want to. lol.

Now the fun begins! Seems like you're still on pins & needles. I bet in a week you'll have more miles on that engine than I do on the 408. The garage rebuild is keeping me busy, and the flywheel lost some teeth. I'm gonna haft to eventually take the flywheel out and get it reringed.

Do you still have the 7.5" rear end under this car? I can't remember you doing a swap on it.

good memory thunderbolt, actually yes I do.  My 8.8 from the donor car is outside in the driveway.  My plans is to get that installed with new gears in a month or so on a lift instead of the garage like we did J's car...because that sucked on his car and I can't imagine doing mine with over 160k miles on it.

It means I can't peal out heavily from a stop or I'll certainly blow the rear end out

luckily I have an auto, so it actually should be ok if I'm not crazy with it.

Old guy, but the memory is still working well. just wish all my other parts were working as well.

Swapping out rearends without a lift isn't that bad. I switched rear ends in the two notches last summer. One was in the dirt beside the garage, and the other was in the little "tin shack" of a garage. I'm sure J is a big help too. I'm usually doing all this stuff by myself.

I'm prolly gonna switch'em back this summer to take advantage of the stronger rear end with the bigger motor. I really wasn't planning on keeping the '83, but I couldn't bring myself to sell it. I see potential for this car, especially now!

Nicole...I will just say this...I have read all your blogs from the beginning about your car...and well I am so impressed...Your car is awesome.  You made it happen... don't ever think I could take on a project like you just conquered...WOW

Thanks, that means allot to me.  I definately go for the hard projects for some reason, one of the reasons is to inspire others.

It's funny, if I never started with a 4 cyl to begin with then I would not have gotten this far in modifying my own car....by the time it needed rings I had already undertaken the 5.0 swap.  ...that lead me to a realization that I could build my engine if I wanted to

...are you gonna switch out the rear end too eventually...or did you...and well glad to see some girl power on here if you know what I mean...Congrats again  ...and post a video...

the 8.8 rear must be changed because i'm going to be pushing close to 280 hp and then next year I'll be at 380...the 7.5 isn't going to handle that.  So; in a month yes I'm swapping it.

UPDATE:

we got delayed on the test drive today today because around 3pm we went to start it and nothing happened...we had to mess around with the tigger wire on the starter relay and then got it started...then I had to mess around with my fan that wouldn't turn on...so about 6 pm we finally went to pull it out of the garage

...and it took a stupid amount of time to get the fluid to cycle through the tranny....you have to go through the shifter gears over and over again.  So; then we pull the car out of the garage and noticed a few tranny line connections were leaking....so we're going to finish fixing those tomorrow...

So; my I drove about 16 feet today!  LOL

That's 16 feet more than the '83 has moved in two weeks. The '89 has even moved less than that in the last year.  You're there! Just all the little annoying things to take care of!
