4nomore's 302 has seen better days

After completing the 5.0 swap it was suspected the engine needed rings...As the past few years have passed burning oil had become more noticable and surely this engine had seen better days....so this past week I had the engine tested and I'm seeing 40% leakage past the rings (20% is considered normal and 10% is awesome)

The car runs great, it's more an inconvienence at this point- just need to check the oil ever week and wash my inside windshield constantly.

I CAN continue to drive the car...but I really hate cleaning my windshield and I wanted a kennebell by next year-  So I have a delima, a few options I'm thinking about:

1.  Drive the car another year and deal with it next winter... or do it this winter
2.  Engine options: Crate long block, have mine rebuilt, or rebuild mine and get help as needed...or even buy anther 5.0 and rebuild that....and keep stang down-time to a minimum.

...I want 400 hp with the kennebell and finding a long block with the cam and heads I want will be a pain and expensive- then I'm also stuck with the core.  I'm thinking I should take the high risk like I did with the 5.0 swap - rebuild the same engine right here in our garage...I've got some decisions to make.

If youre gonna rebuild it, spend the money on all good parts.  Go ahead and stroke that bad boy to a 347 and get that kenne bell another day.  The 347 will put a nice sized smile on your face, and you gotta rebuild the thing anyway!

hmm...agreed on building strong; but a 347 stroked engine will probably be overkill for me

Looks like you have already made up your mind Nicole to rebuild your current engine block. Might as well get it done this winter and you can do the blower next winter. I would rather have the 331 or 347 under the hood.  This way... if you wanted even more power later you could still do the blower.

Hey Nic.  When you pull it,  get it checked for cracks and such, have it bored and honed. then get new stuff to put in. If you are planning on a KB, get the correct pistons now, forged rods, crank, and consider the conditions of your heads. Grab a cam designed for the KB and let it roll. If you use a KB you wont need a 331 or a 347
The timing of the build is entirely up to you! If you have the funds for all of this stuff, do it this winter, otherwise you could limp it thru another season.

Hi Nicole. Seems you have made up your mind but heres another thought. Pick up another 5.0  short block (to minimize downtime), bore it out to a 306 & add a good cam, set of heads & intake. Just that right there will/should give you great horse power & reliablity without needing a supercharger. Coincidently, i am in the exact same boat as you with mine needing a rebuild too - its starting to smoke more often. My plan is to just buy another short block & build that one up to minimize down time & maybe sell my current 5.0 after to get back some of the money i spent on the new build up.

what you have already planned is a good idea. there is no real reason to go 331 or 347 if you do not want that much power. since you are obviously going with th kb. what i do strongly recommend is getting a new block thoguh. dss racing offers the ford production 302 for less than 650 with level 10 machining, or i would recommend getting the ford production block with level 20 cnc. if you do this you are going to greatly reduce your chances of block faillure. also if you go this way you can begin your engine build before you even remove the one currently in you stang and it is still cost effiecent.
