Fan...or radiator

ok, so my stang runs a little hot on long road trips after high rpms for a long period of time...it doesn't overheat, but the longer I drive...the hotter it keeps getting.

I have no problems even driving an hour or so; but after a few hours..

anyway, I plan to upgrade the radiator and the clutch fan, but I'm trying to keep a budget (which I blew already this year)  so; what will get more more cooling upfront...a double row brazed core radiator...or an electric fan?  -I have the stock radiator now (it's only 1 year old) and a 20 year old clutch fan...which spins but I have no idea if it's even working the way it should...I suppose it is since it does suck/blow particles so I know it's working to some degree anway (I really have no idea how clutch fans work...so I guess if it's spinning then it's probably spinning the correct force? )

back to the question...long road trips
radiator...or electric fan...what will help more short term.

I want to drive my stang to detroit again this year, and if end up overheating again I'll get pretty pissed off.  (last year I was missing my deflector at the bottom..so that's fixed..but it's not quite enough in my opinion)

i would go radiator if your fan is still spinning then you should be fine wit that. i have a ford motorsport in mine and it works great with the stock fan.

just because it spins doesnt mean that its good.it could very well be that the bearing in the actual clutch fan is starting to seize up.something else you should check is the condition of the plastic blades where the blades join the actual plastic hub of the fan,you will be surprised how bas it is cracked, when i updated mine to an electric fan i couldnt believe how close the blades were to being broke off.so before you put a new rad in and have a blade come off and go through your new rad check the blades closely.

also your clutch fan doesnt spin when you are on the highway, the air blowing through the rad it what cools your engine.something you might want to check or do is replace your thermostat with a new one (ford only) and maybe check your water pump unless its new also.

I would go with the adjustable temperature electric fan first. It can be added to the new radiator later when your budget allows for it.

can you test the bearing by trying to turn the fan blades with the car off?  should you be able to turn it by hand?  if I recall i could rotate the fan...but with resistance-   should it be possible to rotate it at all with a good bearing?  -and would it matter that much if it is slipping 15 or 20% ?

when you say the longer you drive it the hotter it gets, makes me think you have a bad bearing in the clutch fan.it could be that once the bearing heats up and expands it is making your fan turn slower.its really hard to say without seeing it.but the way you say what you are saying its seems like it could be a flow problem too.what if you just cruise around town 30-40 mph for 2-3 hours is it ok?? or just after cruising long periods on the highway??i have also saw old rad hoses that will somewhat collapse with vacuum that restrict flow.that is one of the toughest to diagnose because it will only do it under high rpm

Nic - If you are still running the 4 cyl radiator then upgrade that thing. You may even be able to pick up an aluminum one from Summit or Jegs - like a BeCool.

This fan flows insane air especially for the price.  Watch for a radiator mine was an ebay purchase, new in box, direct fit $100.

only install an electric fan w/ the 130 amp alternator upgrade!! also, i will bet that its just the clutch on the fan. easy fix & not too expensive. look into the SSP (mustang police car) fan clutch as it is more heavy duty. i use a direct drive Flex fan. cools like a MOFO :-) Nicole, since you dont have AC, you did remove the AC condenser right?

This flex-a-lite is made for the 84 to 93 Mustang.

This is the one I bought along with the FRPP 3 row aluminum radiator. The one above had not come out yet.

Well I dont think your fan is the problem. It has to be not enough flow of air or coolant. Is it possible your trans cooler is blocking too much air from your radiator ? Make sure a piece of cardboard or something hasnt blown up there infront of your radiator too(That happened to a friend of mine). I think I would flush the system, and check or replace the thermostat. Make sure your new air deflector is for a GT not a LX. If I remember correctly the one on my coupe was smaller than my GT. If you need me to measure mine for you I will,no problem. If all else fails throw a high flow water pump on there. You can also put some water wetter or another brand of the same product in there. This is more of a band-aid than fixing the actual problem, but it will cool it down some.

I only found one deflector available when I replaced mine a few months ago.

i agree with mark, your not getting enough flow through the system,if you have the deflector on,and there is nothing blocking your rad.then your problem is in the flow of the system, either a thermostat that isnt opening all the way,a rad hose that is collapsing under high pressure, debris inside the water jackets in the engine blocking flow,or maybe when you overheated it last year, you cracked a cylinder head, maybe the water pump is going for a crap.

Then it would get smoken hot in traffic, not on a 3 hour run. BTW my 2.3l radiator and the radiator I took out of the GT are the same.

but nicole the fan doesnt get used at high rpm on the highway.electric or otherwise, only at low or moderate speeds.so that isnt going to help.how old are your rad hoses??? did you buy a ford thermostat or a cheap one??? i still say you have a flow issue

....ok...I think maybe I should flush it out again...I was thinking how I got some crap built up in my heater core enough to partially clog it...I guess there could still be some blockage in other places?  would a standard flush take care of it then?  or should I do anything special?

my new radiator holds 2x the fluid as stock so yes it will help no matter what.

a bigger rad may help...as far as your timing goes i run 18 degrees in mine with no issues.ford actually sells an engine block cleaner, its called an iron ph balancer or something like that (was like 60.00 cdn).you run this stuff through your cooling system for at least 200 miles and then flush it.how big is the trans cooler in size.it shouldnt matter unless air isnt flowing through it. i have an a/c rad in front of mine,i never had an issue even with the stock rad.

flow correct,if you have the correct mix (anti freez/water),hoses arnt collapsing, thermostat checked,....AIR FLOW ,,,,open up the front!   Take a second to look how much is blocked; notice cobras etc. all have an opening ,you can buy a cobra vent from cervinis etc,   a cheap fix/that cant hurt

That probably will help stangaratti, but its still a crutch for the problem, not fixing whats causing the problem.

there is no reason why you should have to open up the front nicole, its not like you have the only gt bumper on the planet.the name of that cleaner from ford is "neutral ph iron cleaner" the part # is F8AZ-19A503-AA.also that water wetter stuff mark was talking about is really good stuff, redline makes it.good luck let us know how you make out
