History
Well here was one of the weak spots in this purchase.....The Girl had 170K on her. Surprisingly she ran strong, but all of the suspension was toast. All of it.
All of the bushings and sway bar links were replaced with energy suspension polyurethane as I went through.
I started up front by pulling the steering rack to replace the bushings. This was drained and examined for wear as well as the inner tie-rods inspected. I was pleased to find the rack in good shape and the inner tierods to be new. I found the reciept in the jockey later......
The outer's were replaced with units from flaming river.
Next were brakes and front suspension. Everything was pulled and inspected. New brake pads/shoes and a spin on the machine is good for now. Brake upgrades will come later.
The lower control arms were tossed in the trash as the passenger side had some webbing around the lower ball joint. Somebody got excited changing that puppy once upon a time. These were replaced with FRPP control arms, poly bushings, and greasable Moog joints. The spindle was pulled and de-rusted then painted. Bearings replaced. Struts switched for KYB GR-2's and the coil isoslators replaced. I left the stock springs but re-painted and de rusted them. I will be maintaining the stock ride height as Seattle roads are nearly the equivelant to light offroading.
In the rear I replaced all the bushings and swapped the lower control arms for a set of Maximum Motorsport Arms. One of my originals was very bent. While I was in there I tossed the quad shocks in the trash, and replaced the shocks with KYB GR-2's.
I still have to replace the Upper Arms with a set of the FRPP's goodies and sperical bushings for the dif connection.
I also need a set of subframe connectors desperately, but will get there eventually, I just dread welding under there with the limited space. It is easy on the Explorer, but this one well I get burned.
Tread at this point is the cheapest set of tires in the stock size I could get my hands on to get off a fix it ticket, I will eventually upgrade the tire and rim package, but I have to decide on a break plan first
Just a couple part pictures for fun.
I just could not leave well enough alone as I found the convertible to be just way too floppy on the roads......so
Full Length Maximum Motorsports Subframe connectors are getting welded on in my garage this weekend.
