My '93 is now 15 years old and has been retitled and registered as a Classic.  I am in the process of looking for classic/collector's insurance for it now.  Does anyone have any experience American Collectors Insurance company (www.AmericanCollectors.com) - or do you have another company that you can recommend that has been good to work with? Any help is appreciated.

Turns out that Hagerty is actually a partner with Allstate (my regular carrier) and Allstate can write policies underwritten by Hagerty. Bad news is that for stock (like my 93) they have to be 21 years old - odd number but...  I also looked at Grundy who is litterally right down the road from my office but they did not provide the limits I needed. My allstate agent knew of American Collectors and said they are reputable.  He also looked over the policy they wrote for me and said all seemed in order - he is great agent!!!  So I ended up going with them - $269/year - which is great compared to what I was paying!

Tim, in PA (pronounced pee-yaa) LOL  - a car can be title as a classic 15 years after original production date. You pay a one time fee of $75 dollars for retitle and registration.  You are limited to 2500 miles per year and you must have proof of another primary vehicle.  The car also has to be largely original and yo have to have documented proof with pictures.

THanks Tim. If they have a 2500 mile limit here I am screwed. I do a lot more than that on the 87.

I will check it out though.

Most of the specialty insurance is based on driving low mileage per year! One of the main things they will ask if you will be driving it to work ,or if you have another form of transportation. Classic insurance is a specialty insurance that will re-place the true value of the vehicle, not the factory based one. They will ask you to have it appraised, then the insurance will be based on the appraised value.hope this helps clear up some questions.

James is right.  They made me show my Allstate declarations to prove that I had one additional (or regular daily driver) vehicle for each of the licensed drivers in my household of which there are four.  My policy also states that the car cannot be used to replace a temporarily disabled daily driver vehicle and will not be used for general transportation to and from work.  It can also never be driven by anyone with less than 10 years driving experience (i.e my daughters!!!) or anyone I know to have been convicted of a DUI.  They asked me to sign an affidavit agreeing to same.
