| Polishing aluminum is looked at as a difficult thing to do. With these steps it will be very easy and give you a look that other's want and appreciate. First, if you have a painted or powder coated piece, for example an intake. You want to get "Aircraft Paint Stripper" Make sure you wear a make when using this product. It is very toxic and can knock you over. Second, you want to start with some 400 grit sand paper to get the rough spots down on the intake. Then switch to a 600 grit paper and do the whole area again. Then you will want to move to a 1000 grit paper and continue sanding. So far you have just dry sanded the aluminum by hand or with a electric sander. If you go electric I suggest the Porter Cable Orbitting Sander. It can be picked up at any woodworker's warehouse or Home Depot. This is what the intake should look like before the wet sanding. [ remotely linked image: click here ] [ remotely linked image: click here ] After the dry sanding is complete you want to go with a 1500 grit wet sanding paper. Yes, keep the paper good and wet and go over the aluminum. This will help get the scratches out that were made by the other sanding. After you are satisfied with the look of the sanding and it is smooth you want to get a good, high quality Polish and hand polish the entire piece.
