Interior - Reconstruction

THE 2005 / 2006 INTERIOR REBUILD
FROM BEIGE TO BLACK

BEIGE / BEFORE  - BLACK / AFTER

HERE'S THE WORK

The photo on the right shows the completed panel after stripping the vinyl, repairing borken areas, laying down the speaker carpet and dying the armrests black.

These door panels were easiest to do because they did not have the inserts near the door handles. The bottom pockets were removed (and never put back on). Both door panels were dyed black and the door handles painted with interior black.  I had two other pairs that would eventually be done using white inserts near the door handles.

Luckily for the Fox body owners there are now new sets of basic door panels that can be purchased. Since these do not have the middle and bottom inserts it will now make moded originals unique.

The two upper photos show the difference in my custom work. I decided to leave out the rear window switches when I laid the carpet down and just coiled the switch and harness behind the rear panels.  Since no one will be sitting in the back seats it makes for a nice custom feature. Before installing the panels I had to rebuild both window motors replacing the nylon gears inside. It's easy, but man is it messy and they don't actually make a rebuild kit for  the rear motors. The standard kit needs to be modified.

The two photos above show the paint difference on the kick panels & door handles. These kick panels are a pain in the ass, at least on my car. I can't get the paint to adhere to the passenger despite sanding, priming and painting. Might have to get another set from the junkyard and work those or cover both with speaker carpet.

This was my first attempt at anything like this. Even though I made some mistakes it came out pretty good. The parts were either from a junkyard or latemodelrestoration.com. The before and after photos show the drastic changes in the interior. The new interior helps hide the age of the car.

The dash was cleaned and dyed. The AC vents were painted flat black. The new seats, the carpet, paint and dye makes the interior look like a different Mustang. My total cost for the interior so far was right around $1000 (most of that in seats & rear quarterpanels). The Cobra seats cost $300 from "Dave's Used Mustang Parts" (they no longer sell used parts). I like them, but really want some GT seats from and 85 or 86 Mustang. To get a decent set of Convertible Rear Panels I parted with $300 and they showed up in two colors and some breakage on them. I modified both of these areas before laying down the speaker carpet. There was $160 for the carpet with mass back. And a wasted $160 for a billet kit (the electric window switches were shit and would not work right. Most were to tight of a fit.

The best place to shop for me has been a local junkyard. There never have a V8 models, but lots of convertibles and 4cyl carsor parts.

Completion: I have since changed out the seats again and begun to add some white parts to the interior area.

IT'S CRUISIN' TIME!
