66 Mustang 289 GT

updated: Apr 4th 2013 @ 12:04 PM

A friend called and told me about a "survivor" 69 Boss 302 that needed engine work (I bought it sight unseen). I had it taken to the friend's shop in Dallas to have a slight bore job (replacing pistons, rods, bearings, cam, lifters & do a valve job while in there). Took  the Winter off from putting the 289 from my 66 (rebuilt w/ 332 Eagle Stroker Kit and Edelbrock heads, B-303 cam, etc) & WC T-5 into my 1949 Studebaker Pickup (we did a frame off resto-mod last Fall). Had to suspend operations so I could work on my third book in my "Immortal Relations" series. If interested in MY first two, see: http://amzn.com/B006ZCBT6Ghttp://amzn.com/BOOA4IEHL6  My wife's Hemi Powered 64 Studebaker Wagon is shown on in some pictures on the site as well.

FIRST PICS ARE SIAMESE BORE DART IRON EAGLE BLOCK (SPAYED 4-BOLT 2, 3 & 4). IT HAS A BILLET EAGLE STROKER CRANK & RODS W/CUSTOM DIAMOND PISTONS & CUSTOM ROLLER TORQUE CAM! WE ALSO INSTALLED "ROD & CUSTOM" COIL OVER SUSPENSION (SHOCK TOWERS REMOVED) AND POWER RACK & PINION STEERING, SBSS FRONT BRAKES WITH ZINC WASHED SLOTTED ROTORS. BILLET FLYWHEEL AND MOROSO 7QT DOUBLE HUMP PAN WERE INSTALLED TO CLEAR THE RACK & PINION STEERING! CAR HAS BEEN ON THE ROAD SINCE 10-17-08 AND GOT A TOP 20 AWARD AT ENNIS FFW ON 10-19-08 & NMRA AT HOUSTON IN 09. PLEASE RANK MY S/C LIVERNOIS STROKER 5.0 3V 05 ROUSH WITH TR-6060 (6-SPEED) ON SEPERATE GS WEB PAGES!  WE INSTALLED AN AEM WIDE RATIO A/F GAUGE TO MONITOR THE ENGINE IN MY 66 & INSTALLED EIGHT INCH WIDE, 17" TORQUE THRUST IIs ON THE REAR TO ACCEPT 10.5" WIDE 275 X 40 X 17 TIRES TO HOLD THE ENGINE'S TORQUE! WE TUNED IT & DID A 100 SHOT (WITH A 6,500 RPM PILL IN THE 6AL MSD BOX) FOR CRUISING & GOT 474 RWTQ & 466. RWHP, PREVIOUS TORQUE SNAPPED THE DRIVER'S SIDE SPRING SADDLE & CRACKING THE HOUSING but was fixed by Big John's Chassie in Abilene - they did an excellent job! - At the same time I had them add an extra leaf to each spring which really helped the ride and set the rear ride height where I had wanted it!  When the prior shop installed the Rod & Custom Front Coil Over Suspension they used the wrong lube on the Poly Bushings so Big John's used Grafite Oil (like locksmiths use) to solve the squeeking!

Coil Over Suspension, Rack & Pinion Steering & SBSS Brakes Installed - Shock Towers Removed.

READY TO PUT MY DART IRON EAGLE 363 CI & BUILT TREMEC 3550 INTO THE 66!

March Billet Serpentine Kit w/Twin Electric Fans w/68 Size Alum Radiator.

NOTE, SHOCK TOWERS GONE THANKS TO THE COIL-OVERS W/POWER RACK & PINION STEERING!

ANOTHER VIEW OF THE 363 c.i. STROKER ENGINE

THE ENGINE IS A TORQUE MONSTER SO GOT SOME ZERO-OFFSET (TO KEEP THE OUTSIDE OF WHEEL IN LINE WITH THE BODY) EIGHT INCH WIDE, 17" TORQUE THRUST IIs  & INSTALLED 275 X 40 X 17 PUTTING 10+" OF RUBBER ON THE ROAD TO TRY AND CONTROL THE TORQUE. IN ORDER TO MAKE SURE THE TIRES CLEARED THE BODY PANELS, SPRINGS, ETC. WE INSTALLED FIVE & A HALF INCH LONG SPRING SHACKLES IN THE REAR GIVING A LITTLE OVER 2" MORE ROOM AT THE WHEEL WELL (SEE PICS). WHEN THE TORQUE RIPPED OUT THE DRIVER'S SIDE SPRING SHACKLE IN 06-10, WE ADDED ANOTHER LEAF SPRING, ADDING STEEL SUPPORTS TO THE SHACKLES & BEEFED UP ALL THE WELDS - 'AINT TORQUE FUN?!

HERE IS THE CAR RETURNED FROM THE SHOP, AFTER INSTALLING THE ENGINE, SUSPENSION, STEERING, SBSS BRAKES & 17's W/10.5's ON THE REAR!

OLDER PIC OF JEM DASH PANEL WITH WHITE FACE AUTOMETER GAUGES - STEERING COLUMN POD HOLDS NOS PRESSURE GAUGE & WE JUST BOUGHT A JEM WHITE FACED WIDE RANGE AIR-FUEL GAUGE TO INSTALL IT OFFSET ON OPPOSIT SIDE OF STEERING COLUMN.
JACK ROUSH SIGNED THE DRINK HOLDER REPLACING THE ASH TREY & CHIP FOOSE DREW CAR'S PICTURE & SIGNED GLOVE BOX!

THE TRUNK HAS MIRRORS, CHROMED NOS BOTTLE & A FEW AWARDS FROM FUN FORD WEEKENDS & MY FAVORITE THE MARINE CORP "PICK" AT THE TOY FOR TOTS SHOW IN ABILENE, TEXAS

THE FOLLOWING ARE OLDER PICTURES TAKEN BEFORE THE LATEST ROUND OF MODIFICATIONS - OF COURSE MODS ARE LIKE DRUGS YOU NEVER REALLY FINISH THEM! LOL

Six Inch Cowl Hood came from a California Mfg. looking like it had been hit by a 12 ga shotgun! Mike's Elite Collision fixed & painted to match the Wimbeldon White w/Red Insert Underneath.

Wimbowldon White - Original Red Pony Interior (Redyed) - 66 Mustang GT with new rear axles & 3.55 Locker w/Traction Bars. Rod & Custom Coil-Over Front Suspension w/Rack & Pinion Steering and New SBSS Fr. Disc Brakes installed. We removed the Shock-Towers (freeing up space for LenMar to install the Dart Iron Eagle Splayed 4-Bolt Main Block). The new block is a 4.125 Bore X 4.0 Stroke allowing us to go to 363 cubic inches with Billet Eagle Stroker & Forged Diamond Pistons. Reused the Ceramic Coated Edelbrock Performer Intake, Coated Hooker Super-Comp Headers (front tube had to be cut & rerouted because the tube blocked the new steering shaft). 650 cfm Edelbrock 1806 Carb as well as Four Stack Air Cleaner, Holley Electric Fuel Pump w/Regulator & Edelbrock NOS System with Polished Bottle. 15" Torque Thrust II's on front, 17" Rear, also Rear Air Shocks & Global West Convertible Sub-Frames. The new Rack & Pinion's Design needed a Rear Sump Side Dipstick MOROSO 710-20521 Oil Pan, SVO Pump & P/U. With the torque this beast produced we swaped the T-5* for a "Built" Tremec 3550 with TriAx Shifter. We kept the Flow-Kooler Water Pump & 68 Size Griffin 2X1-1/4" Row Alum. Radiator good to 800hp by opening the radiator mount). Put the  Billet Optima Battery in trunk, added 160 Fail-Safe thermostat w/dual 2,700cfm 13" Shrouded Electric fans & Cool Flex hoses, MSD Billet Dist. w/6AL Box & 8.5 wires. Belt allignment issues forced use of a Serpentine Belt System.  Stainless 2 & 1/2" dual exhausts with Dr. Gas X-Pipe to Magnaflows (better sound than Flowmaster 50s IMO). JME "Eleanor" Gauge Cluster w/Auto Meter Phantom White Face Gauges, Old Air A/C & Cruiser Console. Four Rockford-Fosgate two-way speakers, two in kick panels, two in console, single Alpine 'R' 10" in custom trunk sidebox with an Alpine 605 Amp & R-F 1-Farid Capacitor. Chip Foose drew a picture of my 'Stang on & signed the glove box (See pic w/Chip Foose at Unique Performance 04).  I added a GT-350-R Valance, Spoiler & Mirrors, also Stainless Steel Engine Bay Frame & 6" Fiberglass Cowl Hood. NOTE: We have rebuilt the O.E. 289 from my 66, with a Eagle 332 Stroker Kit keeping the Melling HV Oil Pump & P/U & Milodon Oil Pan w/Billet 3-grove crank pulley & 2-grove billet waterpump pulley (non-cataloged Summit Items) for use in a future project (I'd like to find a Ford Falcon or early Ranchero).

Car Awarded Best Mustang at 2005 Houston Fun Ford Weekend & won it's Class at Yellow-Rose Ford Car Show. It got first Best of Show at Dyess AFB's Air/Car Show in 05 & won it's Class & Mustang Brand Team Award at 05 Dallas FFW!  It's selection as the Marine's Pick at 1st Toys for Tots Abilene Show is my most prized award! The Marines are the greatest folks on the earth - they saved my bacon while I was in the Air Force more than once! Also picked up an award at Houston NMRA in 2009 as well as numerious car shows around the state.
