I live within a day's drive of Ft. Campbell. On our wedding anniversary, we took a cruise on the General Jackson Showboat, and sat with a pair of newlyweds.
The young man had a story to tell - it was his last weekend before being deployed. They were celebrating with a touch of bittersweet as they'd only been married a week or so. His destination, of course, had to remain undisclosed. But I could pretty much tell where he was headed; sixth sense, I guess.
Strong, determined, bold - he was ready to face down any hazard and kick its butt. I led a toast to him that night and shook the man's hand. With people like him standing guard, I felt safe and extremely grateful.
I've thought of them often since then, the soldier and his wife. With the recent news involving two men from this area, my prayers are with this young couple, and everyone else brave enough to serve our country.
