I learned something new today

anyone who followed my swap knows that I had my fuel lines installed by a local shop (so I wouldn't accidently f-it up)  ...and the idiot installed them wrong so the rubber connectors hit the tire until I had a fuel leak after teh 2 day on the road as a 5.0.  -later I had the shop fix it up- but I've always been worried it would leak again one day..

now; I've noticed on a few occassions the smell of gas..almost like the day I had that gas leak- but since it wasn't that often and I never found any leak- I ignored it thinking it was just my exhaust (off road x-pipe)

lately it seemed I smell it every morning when I go to work- was it getting worse? do I have a slow or sparatic leak somewhere that'll set fire one day?

so i searched online..hoping maybe I'd find something out (god knows I wired my fuel pump too- when it comes to gass I trust nothing!).  Luckily I did find out that an off road x pipe -no cats WILL smell heavily at gas sometimes..some stang drivers complain about it because it can get bad enough to smell enough..to get noticed and posted about by dozens of others)

so..I put it together, I park on a hill at home when I'm not in the garage-
being on the hill it always takes 2 cranks to start the car in the morning (my fuel pump wiring I'm sure)  so; the extra fuel from from the second crank is creating more excess fuel smells in the exhaust in the mornings...and I don't have this issue comming home because it only takes one quick crank to start it up.

this also leads me to beleive that advanced timing could also reduce this problem- since I never smell gas except when I double crank- I know normally I have burnt up all the fuel nicely- I run a ragged edge on the timing and use 93 octane from running lean.

so I thought I'd post my experience- since if you have off road xpipe and have a constant gas fume smell- advancing the timing a bit may help.

as for me- I just need to not park on the hill if I want to avoid it- but knowing i'm not leaking somewhere makes me feel allot better.

I have the strong fuel smell also due to O/R H-pipe and increased fuel pressure and timing. No hill though.

Nicole .. i experienced something like that once and i found out that if i turned the key on and waited about 5 seconds that the fuel pump would deliver enough gas to the engine that i avoided the second crank. I could also hear the pump .. it would make a soft buzz sound and then stop so i knew the fuel system was primed .. try that an let me know how it works

Are you pulling in up the hill, or backing in up the hill?
