If you have seen my other blogs, you might know i've been working on a new gargae for my GT and my fathers 1969 Plymouth Fury. We have built the entire building from scrap metal racking used in industrial wharehouses.
We put the outer walls together using the racking, took the 8 foot cross bars and welded them together to make the trusses.
This is the beast we used to set the front wall up and the trusses. (A 24 foot long x 8 foot tall wall made out of White oak 4x4's and 2x6's lag bolted together with 6 inch bolts are heavy!!!!)
Dad and I welded together a few pieces of scrap and bolted a gin pole to a friends Bobcat to do the heavy work.
Welded a 6 foot piece of chain to the end...
Some of my welding work....ain't pretty but it's strong!!!!!
We bolted the 2x4's to the trusses useing 6 inch carriage bolts. It took 6 drill bits, 120 bolts, and ALOT of ratcheting to get it all up!
We used 18 foot long sheets of FREE used tin and 800 galvinized screws to cover the roof. Eventually, we will cover the rest of the garage with the remainder of tin and self-tappers. A neighbor needed a bottom end rebuild on his Dodge truck so we traded him out of two 10 foot doors to go on the front even up...
After all is said in done, some where around $500.00 for a 24x36 building....oh ya and ALOT of BenGay for the sore back muscles!!!!!! I'll add more as we get it done....
UPDATE 11-22-2009
After a few months of working on this crate.....NEW PICTURES!!!
South side of the building.
West side East side
interior west side
Slider is made out of extra panels of over head door bolted solid with flat steel and 1 inch angle to reenforce it.
My genius and COST SAVING IDEA to use "C" channel bolted to the top of the door and angle iron welded with nuts welded together for the rollers to slide into and pinned so they can be replaced if needed. The rollers fit into left over track from the over head doors up side down so the curve is pointed up. FREE and it keeps the rollers from comming out!!!
SHELF SPACE ANYONE!!!
Work benches like this one are going to be on both east and west sides of the garage. Mainly for junk...of course!
